Between the enduring popularity Nintendo Switch, The increasing power of flagship phones and new services, such as Apple Arcade, Portable games have finally come to the forefront. However, the disappearance of the 3.5mm port on mobile devices has caused many players to lose high-quality audio-when you need to perfectly synchronize audio, Bluetooth earbuds can’t completely cut it off. If you want a rock-solid connection, your best choice is an RF dongle, which usually uses USB-A, in a world that is steadily surpassed by USB-C ports. Razer has finally launched a mobile-first headset that can be connected to your Switch, Android phone or thin and light laptop. $100 Barracuda X.
Barracuda X is far from the first headset for Nintendo Switch players. We are big fans of SteelSeries Arctis 1 wireless Due to its comfort and excellent audio quality, it is even included in some of our Gift GuideIt can be said that this headset is Barracuda’s main competitor. Even the RF adapter looks the same.
However, although Arctis 1 Wireless maintains the standard appearance of the series (it should be-this is a great design), Barracuda is a change in Razer’s rhythm.Instead of Kraken Brand Round, grated appearance, the new headphones are similar to last year’s Opus headphones, Got a Refresh last month. It’s not exactly the same, the connectors on the cup are different, and the ear pads are cloth instead of artificial leather. At the time of writing, the temperature in New York is 90 degrees and I can report that even after wearing the Barracuda for a few hours, I did not feel the need to remove it. It’s still a bit hot, and it feels a bit cold after taking off the headphones, but it’s okay.
The Barracuda X weighs only 250 grams, making it one of the lightest headphones I have tested. (I think it may be lighter than its own packaging.) In direct comparison, its feel is Turtle Beach with Logitech, But there is a balance in Barracuda’s plastic construction that makes it feel more elegant. I don’t mind leaving it on my head for a few hours or throwing it in my backpack so I can play on the train. This is the point: you shouldn’t feel that carrying this thing with you is a burden.
Although I won’t throw this thing around in a fit of anger, it does give people a solid feel and can fit a few times in your bag. My perception of the detachable microphone is complicated; being able to remove it means a more compact headphone design, but this is another cumbersome part that I might lose. Again, you are unlikely to need voice features when you are out. (Oops, the Switch console doesn’t even have a real voice chat feature; it will ask you to connect through an app on your phone.)
Barracuda X excites me, mainly because of its USB-C compatibility. But this is also my shortcoming. The adapter is really small, but it is very wide. This means that if you happen to have a laptop with two USB-C ports side-by-side, like my 2017 MacBook, the Barracuda dongle will completely block the other. This is troublesome in my office setup, I connected an external monitor and USB hub on the other side. Therefore, at work, I can choose between the power cord and the headset. I have chosen not to use Barracuda with my laptop, and prefer to listen to podcasts on my phone. However, this is my unique situation. You may only need two ports during the journey: one for the headset and the other for the power supply.
It’s exciting to see companies finally starting to take mobile games seriously and meet the specific needs of these gamers. Controllers for mobile devices are great, but many popular mobile games don’t really need them. Better audio, though? Almost everyone can appreciate this. The $100 price tag may seem a bit high to some people, but Barracuda X It looks versatile enough that you will not only be worth the money.
