Doesn't the mere idea of celebrating atheism "holidays" take us down the same abyss, but from a different direction? Something akin to Politically Correct goddess here.

Agree, Matt. I propose a "differential calculus day" (dunno when); a "quadratic equation day" (er...); a "landing on the moon day" (July 21?); a "changing the name of the Van Allen Belt to the Van Allen Belts because we screwed them with nuclear tests day" (dunno - I read it on a conspiracy website once) and, of course - -23 November. The Bank Holiday to end all Bank Holidays. Street parties,

The problem with celebrating people is that they come with baggage. I think the publication of the books symbolises the struggle between innovation and dogma better.

I have to strongly disagree on this.From a modern perspective the ideas of Darwin and Newton are trivially self-evident. Their greatness comes not from their ideas but from the fact they had the courage and imagination to think them and smuggle them past the luddite tendencies of the human race.
