A few days ago I bought myself an iPod Nano.
Until now, I'd always seen the iPod brand as just an overpriced MP3 player range. But I needed something that played a wide range of formats and figured that, as I was looking at an expensive model anyway, I might as take the plunge and see what they're like.
While I only have cheap models to compare it to, the iPod Nano is indeed a classy thing - solid, stylish and great to use. Should I have to replace it at some point (assuming that point isn't in the next year or so), I'll definitely give Apple another look.
The only downside is that it can only be run through iTunes. In itself, this isn't too bad. I've had iTunes on my (Dell) computer for quite a while now and never really had any problems with it. If, however, Apple rush out a new version of iTunes in order to support their new (US-only) movie download service, a new version that, for some unfathomable reason, doesn't like working with iPods, then it's a problem. A big problem.
At first I thought it was the iPod that was dodgy. But a few minutes on google revealed that I wasn't the only one having issues. iTunes 7 is just buggy as hell.
My computer recognises that the iPod has connected no problem. iTunes, though, freezes up for a good five minutes before either grudgingly connecting to the iPod or crashing. Even assuming that it's the former, which is rare, it then takes ages to complete even the simplest task and has a tendency to start syncing random playlists from iTunes. Clicking on eject causes it to freeze up completely.
What's more annoying is that on the rare occasions it works, it works beautifully: Downloading the latest podcasts in my collection and transferring music files seamlessly.
I love my new iPod. If iTunes 7 worked the way it's supposed to, I'd be writing a post about how I'd finally joined the Apple love-in. Maybe I will write that post when the next version of iTunes is released.
Maybe.

My iTunes has took its bat and ball home- it can't find the My Music folder. I dicked about with the permissions, then eventually dumped it and use Realplayer now.
Welcome to the family... brother.
I've been all mac-ed up since 98. Haven't had a problem all this time!
...at least not enough of a problem to change my loving attitude towards the product.
Which is more than can be said for my old Gateway PC which I logged over 40 with tech support trying to fix!
Hope you get it straightened out.
Welcome to iPod territory. It's my second favourite thing after my laptop. I had an expensive mp3 player before because I didn't have Windows XP but as soon as I got a new computer I got an iPod.
I uploaded masses of CDs into iTunes and do podcasts and haven't had any trouble at all and I don't have a mac. I'm very tempted to buy another and have been looking half seriously at the iTouch one. Enjoy.
Shades,
Were you using iTunes 7? Aside from connecting my iPod I've had no trouble with it. My Realplayer software, on the other hand, continually messes me about. The only reason I keep it is because video on the BBC site refuses to play through WMP for me.
Alex,
I'm on the fence when it comes to Macs - I've used my dad's Mac (mini) a few times and found it okay. I think I'm too use to using Windows though. (Plus, I need to use Internet Explorer (!!!) for my online banking).
Hopefully, Apple will release a new version of iTunes with the bugs cleared up. From the Apple forums it's clear that quite a few people are having the same problem.
I'm potentially one upgrade of iTunes away from being a proper Apple groupie. :-)
jmb,
I gave some serious consideration to the iPod Touch. What put me off (aside from the price) was reading that the Wifi had trouble with some routers. Based on my past history of electronics (if it can annoy me, it will) I figured the risk of it conflicting with my router was too great, and plumped for the cheaper, simpler Nano.
Should I feel the need to upgrade, the Touch will definitely be near the top of the list though.
