I suspect that this will only really appeal to the Tin Drummer and myself, but it's my blog, so...
After months of media speculation, the BBC can confirm that the BAFTA award-winning Doctor Who will return for a fifth series in Spring 2010.
Viewers are in for a treat this Christmas, as a special episode starring David Tennant and Kylie Minogue will be broadcast on BBC One in December 2007.
Series Four, which went into production in July 2007, will hit UK screens in Spring 2008, followed by a special episode for Christmas 2008.
In 2009 Doctor Who will return with three specials starring David Tennant, with Head Writer, Russell T Davies.
The full-length fifth series will transmit in 2010.

That's interesting, Matt. There's been a lot of speculation that series 5 (or the 09 series)would be specials, like Midsomer Murders - what's your take on this?
glad that Tennant's doing these as well. I'm just getting the hang of him and I think he's getting the hang of the part.
I'm still pondering the development.
Mainly, I'm just glad that the Beeb likes the show enough to plan ahead like this.
I think that the specials are probably a good idea, keeping things fresh and making series 5 more of an event (especially if there's a new lead actor). Hopefully they'll be two-hours each, as only three hours of Who in '09 doesn't sound that great.
You heard the rumours about the possible S4 baddie yet?
oh yes I have!!
It sounds great. but I also think there is really only one of those, whose interpretation is classic.
The first one.
Incidentally, Matt: my reading, and it may be an overly optimistic one, of the Outpost Gallifrey report on new Who is that the 09 series is to be specials to enable David Tennant to play Hamlet during 08.
I wonder if this is a way of securing his services for longer. Perhaps he'll do series 5 after all!
Excellent!
